Grown-Up Saturday Sessions
Art Workshops - for adults! - at Camp X Camp
Welcome back, friends! This time, we’re inviting the grown-ups to have some serious fun with us here at Camp X Camp!
We’re testing the waters with our Grown-Up Saturday Sessions. Grown-ups can flex their creative muscles for the whole day or drop in for just the morning or afternoon.
These are small-group sessions, with a maximum of 4 participants per workshop. We want our grown-ups to feel supported and encouraged throughout their time here at Camp X Camp!
Robyn LeRoy-Evans will be leading her grown-up campers in Creative Portrait Photography.
John Isiah Walton will be leading his grown-up campers in Neo-expressionist Painting.
MEET YOUR INSTRUCTORS
Robyn LeRoy-Evans is a visual artist working in photography, installation, and performance.
By turning the camera on herself, and through the use of carefully considered materials - such as fabric, clothing, found objects, human hair, clay, and earth - LeRoy-Evans creates imagery and installations that draw inspiration from history, mythology, and her own personal experiences as a mother-artist.
In 2012 she achieved a First Class Honours Degree in Fine Art from Sheffield Hallam University, United Kingdom. She has exhibited nationally and internationally and has work in private collections in the U.S., Canada, and the UK. In 2014 she moved to Bvlbancha (New Orleans) on a whim and remains there to this day with her two children.
Robyn works as an entrepreneur, mother-artist, and is co-founder of Camp X Camp.
John Isiah Walton was born in 1985 in New Orleans, where he currently lives and works. He depicts subjects that are often unconventional and, at times, shocking. Walton works in a reactionary mode.
His visual language is influenced by internet aesthetics, black identity, pop culture, and Louisiana history to deliver poignant social commentary reflecting the contemporary world.
In the tradition of Basquiat, his work often has hidden meanings and symbols, which are revealed through his neo-expressionist markings. The frenetic, choppy brushwork endows the work with the energy and intensity that the artist is known for. He uses wit and irony to address the constructs of race and class with both irreverence and sensitivity, merging politically correct discourse with politically incorrect humor. Like the Realist painters of 19th century France, Walton exchanges the idealistic for the real in his work, continuing the avant-garde’s ethos of merging art and life.
Explaining how he chooses his subject matter Walton says, “New Orleans is one of those messy cities. I just try to catch everything. I catch my own vision of what it is for me to be here.” Walton has exhibited and continues to show in museums, galleries, art fairs, and biennials worldwide.
