Gods of War
Arsenii Gerasymenko
Title: Gods of War
Dimensions: 11” x 17”
Medium: Matte Archival Pigment Prints on Epson ultra smooth
Year: 2022
This particular photo project is dedicated to "Gods of War" and "Flowers of War”, symbolising the people and the machinery of war.
Artillerymen are often referred to as "Gods of War'' in Ukraine. Arsenii uses the exact same 70 year old Graflex Pacemaker Speed Graphic large format film camera used by American photojournalists in the early 1950’s documenting the Korean war. This historic piece of equipment is still working on the frontline, capturing another war, this time in Ukraine.
Another part of his work is dedicated to the dawn of the era of gentle giants or so called 2S7 Pion (peony).
2S7 Pions are Soviet self-propelled 203-mm cannons which played a crucial part in defending Kyiv in the spring of 2022. They will soon be replaced by modern European and American artillery cannons and howitzers, like the Panzerhaubitze 2000.
Arsenii Gerasymenko is a Ukrainian war photographer. Until the beginning of the full scale war on 24th of February 2022, he worked as a travel and fashion photographer, participating in numerous exhibitions in Ukraine, Georgia, USA and throughout Europe.
