Diane Appaix-Castro

Diane Appaix-Castro is a French and Spanish sculptor and experiential installation artist. She was born in Paris, France and grew up in Cambridge, Massachusetts from age four. She received a BFA from The New England School of Art and Design at Suffolk University and an MFA in Sculpture from Tulane University in May 2022. In 2020 she was awarded first place in DIY Art for the show titled Reconnecting in Quarantine at Tulane Hillel. In 2021 Diane received the SLA Graduate Student Summer Research and Write-Up Fellowship Grant and participated in the Southern Heat Exchange Online Residency. Diane also directs a gallery from a New Orleans basement centered in bringing people together around art and food and giving artists room to discuss the intent of their work.

Her work is strongly informed by her experience as an immigrant living at the intersection of three distinct cultures as well as philosophical concepts such as skepticism, the theory of knowledge, magical thinking, and worldmaking. Her influences come from the arts, sciences, and philosophy as well as having lived in multiple countries in Europe and Latin America. Her work aims to push the boundaries of human understanding of what is real and alive by putting into question the credibility and accuracy of our senses.

Diane hopes to push the viewer, or partaker, to see the world as larger than their own experience of it and to become aware of the unknown.
